1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "All right," he said, "but you'll hear me out, won't you? Afterall you have said about loving me, you might hear me. I don'twant to do you any harm. I'll give you the money to go back withwhen you go. I merely want to tell you, Carrie. You can't stopme from loving you, whatever you may think."
2. "We deal with a very good class of people," he told Hurstwood."Merchants, salesmen, and professionals. It's a well-dressedclass. No bums. We don't allow 'em in the place."
3. "Do the best you can," said Quincel consolingly.
4. Drouet, for one, was lured as much by his longing for pleasure asby his desire to shine among his betters. The many friends he methere dropped in because they craved, without, perhaps, consciously analysing it, the company, the glow, the atmospherewhich they found. One might take it, after all, as an augur ofthe better social order, for the things which they satisfiedhere, though sensory, were not evil. No evil could come out ofthe contemplation of an expensively decorated chamber. The worsteffect of such a thing would be, perhaps, to stir up in thematerial-minded an ambition to arrange their lives upon asimilarly splendid basis. In the last analysis, that wouldscarcely be called the fault of the decorations, but rather ofthe innate trend of the mind. That such a scene might stir theless expensively dressed to emulate the more expensively dressedcould scarcely be laid at the door of anything save the falseambition of the minds of those so affected. Remove the elementso thoroughly and solely complained of--liquor--and there wouldnot be one to gainsay the qualities of beauty and enthusiasmwhich would remain. The pleased eye with which our modernrestaurants of fashion are looked upon is proof of thisassertion.
5. "Who with?"
6. "Charlie, you are neglecting a part of your duty," he observed toDrouet most affably. "Between us, though," he went on, "we canshow you."

1. "Well, I should think you'd feel better." Then she added: "Someone might call."
2. Carrie's heart sank.
3. She turned to slip on her jacket.
4. "He does?"
5. "Yes," she answered.
6. Here was a type of the travelling canvasser for a manufacturinghouse--a class which at that time was first being dubbed by theslang of the day "drummers." He came within the meaning of astill newer term, which had sprung into general use amongAmericans in 1880, and which concisely expressed the thought ofone whose dress or manners are calculated to elicit theadmiration of susceptible young women--a "masher." His suit wasof a striped and crossed pattern of brown wool, new at that time, but since become familiar as a business suit. The low crotch ofthe vest revealed a stiff shirt bosom of white and pink stripes. From his coat sleeves protruded a pair of linen cuffs of the samepattern, fastened with large, gold plate buttons, set with thecommon yellow agates known as "cat's-eyes." His fingers boreseveral rings--one, the ever-enduring heavy seal--and from hisvest dangled a neat gold watch chain, from which was suspendedthe secret insignia of the Order of Elks. The whole suit wasrather tight-fitting, and was finished off with heavy-soled tanshoes, highly polished, and the grey fedora hat. He was, for theorder of intellect represented, attractive, and whatever he hadto recommend him, you may be sure was not lost upon Carrie, inthis, her first glance.

1. In silence Hurstwood viewed this scene, and waited. Hiscompanions took his eye for a while, though they did not interesthim much more than the cars. They were an uncomfortable-lookinggang, however. One or two were very thin and lean. Several werequite stout. Several others were rawboned and sallow, as if theyhad been beaten upon by all sorts of rough weather.
2. "No," said Carrie. "I guess I'll get along."
3. The reason for his interest, not to say fascination, was deeperthan mere desire. It was a flowering out of feelings which hadbeen withering in dry and almost barren soil for many years. Itis probable that Carrie represented a better order of woman thanhad ever attracted him before. He had had no love affair sincethat which culminated in his marriage, and since then time andthe world had taught him how raw and erroneous was his originaljudgment. Whenever he thought of it, he told himself that, if hehad it to do over again, he would never marry such a woman. Atthe same time, his experience with women in general had lessenedhis respect for the sex. He maintained a cynical attitude, wellgrounded on numerous experiences. Such women as he had knownwere of nearly one type, selfish, ignorant, flashy. The wives ofhis friends were not inspiring to look upon. His own wife haddeveloped a cold, commonplace nature which to him was anythingbut pleasing. What he knew of that under-world where grovel thebeat-men of society (and he knew a great deal) had hardened hisnature. He looked upon most women with suspicion--a single eyeto the utility of beauty and dress. He followed them with akeen, suggestive glance. At the same time, he was not so dullbut that a good woman commanded his respect. Personally, he didnot attempt to analyse the marvel of a saintly woman. He wouldtake off his hat, and would silence the light-tongued and thevicious in her presence--much as the Irish keeper of a Boweryhall will humble himself before a Sister of Mercy, and pay tollto charity with a willing and reverent hand. But he would notthink much upon the question of why he did so.
4. "I'll go in their barber shop and get a shave," he thought.
5. "Yes, and you," she added, catching the eye of one of thepolicemen. "You bloody, murtherin' thafe! Crack my son over thehead, will you, you hardhearted, murtherin' divil? Ah, ye----"
6. "Lots of boys out, eh?"

应用

1. "Yes; this is the second," answered Carrie.
2. The agent saw he was dealing with an inexperienced soul, andcontinued accordingly.
3. "Thirty-five dollars," he replied.
4、 "What are you going to do to-night?"
5、 Hurstwood went toward the car and stepped nervously on. As hedid so there was a pistol shot. Something stung his shoulder.
