1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Why?" she questioned.
2. He placed himself at the head and called out "Forward." Hurstwoodmoved with the line. Across Fifth Avenue, through Madison Squareby the winding paths, east on Twenty-third Street, and down ThirdAvenue wound the long, serpentine company. Midnight pedestriansand loiterers stopped and stared as the company passed. Chattingpolicemen, at various corners, stared indifferently or nodded tothe leader, whom they had seen before. On Third Avenue theymarched, a seemingly weary way, to Eighth Street, where there wasa lodginghouse, closed, apparently, for the night. They wereexpected, however.
3. At that hour, when Broadway is wont to assume its mostinteresting aspect, a peculiar individual invariably took hisstand at the corner of Twenty-sixth Street and Broadway--a spotwhich is also intersected by Fifth Avenue. This was the hourwhen the theatres were just beginning to receive their patrons.Fire signs announcing the night's amusements blazed on everyhand. Cabs and carriages, their lamps gleaming like yellow eyes, pattered by. Couples and parties of three and four freelymingled in the common crowd, which poured by in a thick stream, laughing and jesting. On Fifth Avenue were loungers--a fewwealthy strollers, a gentleman in evening dress with his lady onhis arm, some club-men passing from one smoking-room to another.Across the way the great hotels showed a hundred gleamingwindows, their cafes and billiard-rooms filled with acomfortable, well-dressed, and pleasure-loving throng. All aboutwas the night, pulsating with the thoughts of pleasure andexhilaration--the curious enthusiasm of a great city bent uponfinding joy in a thousand different ways.
4. "Not a bit."
5. "I will," said Carrie. "Really, I've been wanting to come. Iknow I ought to. It's a shame. But you know----"
6. It is curious to note how quickly a profession absorbs one.Carrie became wise in theatrical lore, hearing the gossip oflittle Lola. She learned what the theatrical papers were, whichones published items about actresses and the like. She began toread the newspaper notices, not only of the opera in which shehad so small a part, but of others. Gradually the desire fornotice took hold of her. She longed to be renowned like others, and read with avidity all the complimentary or critical commentsmade concerning others high in her profession. The showy worldin which her interest lay completely absorbed her.

1. "Well, if you aren't a wonder," Drouet was saying, complacently, squeezing Carrie's arm. "You are the dandiest little girl onearth."
2. "Sixty-seven," the coach-caller was saying, his voice lifted in asort of euphonious cry. "Sixty-seven."
3. "Well, I'm going to be there several weeks. I'm going to studystock at our place and get new samples. I might show you'round."
4. She distinguished very carefully between the young boys of theschool, many of whom were attracted by her beauty.
5. "Well, you never can tell," said Hurstwood. "There may besomething to it. I wouldn't bother about it myself, though. Bythe way," he added, "are you going anywhere to-night?"
6. They were talking at the breakfast table, a morning or two later, when she brought up the dramatic subject by saying that she sawthat Sarah Bernhardt was coming to this country. Hurstwood hadseen it, too.

1. "Isn't it nice?" she answered.
2. "But she ruins my work."
3. By degrees she began to use him. Doing this, however, she lostthe weekly payment of twelve dollars.
4. Hurstwood saw it all clearly enough. He was shrewd after hiskind, and yet there was enough decency in the man to stop himfrom making any effectual protest. In his almost inexplicableapathy he was content to droop supinely while Carrie drifted outof his life, just as he was willing supinely to see opportunitypass beyond his control. He could not help clinging andprotesting in a mild, irritating, and ineffectual way, however--away that simply widened the breach by slow degrees.
5. "I'm all right," said Carrie, smiling.
6. "He's delightful, delightful," he went on, giving the commonplacerendition of approval which such men know. He sent Drouet aftera programme, and then discoursed to Carrie concerning Jeffersonas he had heard of him. The former was pleased beyondexpression, and was really hypnotised by the environment, thetrappings of the box, the elegance of her companion. Severaltimes their eyes accidentally met, and then there poured intohers such a flood of feeling as she had never before experienced. She could not for the moment explain it, for in the next glanceor the next move of the hand there was seeming indifference, mingled only with the kindest attention.

1. Carrie was an apt student of fortune's ways--of fortune'ssuperficialities. Seeing a thing, she would immediately set toinquiring how she would look, properly related to it. Be itknown that this is not fine feeling, it is not wisdom. Thegreatest minds are not so afflicted; and on the contrary, thelowest order of mind is not so disturbed. Fine clothes to herwere a vast persuasion; they spoke tenderly and Jesuitically forthemselves. When she came within earshot of their pleading, desire in her bent a willing ear. The voice of the so-calledinanimate! Who shall translate for us the language of thestones?
2. Hurstwood obeyed. At the corner he saw the wisdom of it. Nosooner did the man perceive the intention to ignore him, than heshook his fist.
3. She was now one of a group of oriental beauties who, in thesecond act of the comic opera, were paraded by the vizier beforethe new potentate as the treasures of his harem. There was noword assigned to any of them, but on the evening when Hurstwoodwas housing himself in the loft of the street-car barn, theleading comedian and star, feeling exceedingly facetious, said ina profound voice, which created a ripple of laughter:
4、 "Why not?" his mind said. "Any one can get work over there. You'll get two a day."
5、 After the first rush of fright, however, the players got over thedanger of collapse. They rambled weakly forward, losing nearlyall the expression which was intended, and making the thing dullin the extreme, when Carrie came in.

{ She did not hear this very well. Her heart was troubled by akind of terror. The fact that she was alone, away from home, rushing into a great sea of life and endeavour, began to tell. She could not help but feel a little choked for breath--a littlesick as her heart beat so fast. She half closed her eyes andtried to think it was nothing, that Columbia City was only alittle way off.

When he reached the flat by half-past five, it was still dark.He knew that Carrie was not there, not only because there was nolight showing through the transom, but because the evening paperswere stuck between the outside knob and the door. He opened withhis key and went in. Everything was still dark. Lighting thegas, he sat down, preparing to wait a little while. Even ifCarrie did come now, dinner would be late. He read until six, then got up to fix something for himself.
