1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "You will have to write and ask him to see you."
2. Young Hurstwood, Jr., was in his twentieth year, and was alreadyconnected in a promising capacity with a large real estate firm.He contributed nothing for the domestic expenses of the family, but was thought to be saving his money to invest in real estate. He had some ability, considerable vanity, and a love of pleasurethat had not, as yet, infringed upon his duties, whatever theywere. He came in and went out, pursuing his own plans andfancies, addressing a few words to his mother occasionally, relating some little incident to his father, but for the mostpart confining himself to those generalities with which mostconversation concerns itself. He was not laying bare his desiresfor any one to see. He did not find any one in the house whoparticularly cared to see.
3. He hastened to his room with rising spirits and changed hislinen. As he did so, he made up his mind that if Carrie wasalone, or if she had gone to another place, it behooved him tofind out. He decided to call at once.
4. "Well," she said, "young woman, what can I do for you?"
5. "I've been sick, I told you," he said, peevishly, almostresenting her excessive pity. It came hard to him to receive itfrom such a source.
6. "Very good, indeed," he said, "for a comedy."

1. Oh, Carrie, Carrie! Oh, blind strivings of the human heart!Onward onward, it saith, and where beauty leads, there itfollows. Whether it be the tinkle of a lone sheep bell o'er somequiet landscape, or the glimmer of beauty in sylvan places, orthe show of soul in some passing eye, the heart knows and makesanswer, following. It is when the feet weary and hope seems vainthat the heartaches and the longings arise. Know, then, that foryou is neither surfeit nor content. In your rocking-chair, byyour window dreaming, shall you long, alone. In your rocking-chair, by your window, shall you dream such happiness as you maynever feel.
2. "Thank you," she answered, with some trepidation and went out.
3. He bought two tickets and Pullman berths. Then he hastened backto Carrie.
4. "No," she said coyly, "but what can I do?"
5. "Swaggering, eh! What! You'll get nothing from me. What do youmean by your insinuations, anyhow?"
6. She shook it off and ate. She forgot, in part, and was merry. When it came to the after-theatre proposition, however, she shookher head.

1. This seemed to renew the general interest in the closed door, andmany gazed in that direction. They looked at it as dumb bruteslook, as dogs paw and whine and study the knob. They shifted andblinked and muttered, now a curse, now a comment. Still theywaited and still the snow whirled and cut them with bitingflakes. On the old hats and peaked shoulders it was piling. Itgathered in little heaps and curves and no one brushed it off.In the centre of the crowd the warmth and steam melted it, andwater trickled off hat rims and down noses, which the ownerscould not reach to scratch. On the outer rim the piles remainedunmelted. Hurstwood, who could not get in the centre, stood withhead lowered to the weather and bent his form.
2. Carrie crossed the hall with rustling skirts, and scrawled thenote, gloves on. When she returned a newcomer was in the Vanceflat.
3. "I don't know," replied the drummer. "They've been trying to getme to get some woman to take a part."
4. "I have had such a nice time," said Carrie, when it was all overand they were coming out.
5. "Oh, go on. What have you got to be afraid of? It's a cheapcompany. The rest of them aren't as good as you are."
6. Crack came an officer's club on his forehead. He blinked hiseyes blindly a few times, wabbled on his legs, threw up hishands, and staggered back. In return, a swift fist landed on theofficer's neck.

1. There was the captain curtly pleading as before. He heard withastonishment and a sense of relief the oft-repeated words: "Thesemen must have a bed." Before him was the line of unfortunateswhose beds were yet to be had, and seeing a newcomer quietly edgeup and take a position at the end of the line, he decided to dolikewise. What use to contend? He was weary to-night. It was asimple way out of one difficulty, at least. To-morrow, maybe, hewould do better.
2. "They've never published my picture."
3. "We'll go right up and get rooms," he said.
4、 "Don't worry about it. Maybe the grocer will wait. He can dothat. We've traded there long enough to make him trust us for aweek or two."
5、 "Well, I must see more of you to-day. I'm just going in here forbreakfast. Come in when you're through."

On the fourth day she was down town all day, having borrowed tencents for lunch from Minnie. She had applied in the cheapestkind of places without success. She even answered for a waitressin a small restaurant where she saw a card in the window, butthey wanted an experienced girl. She moved through the thickthrong of strangers, utterly subdued in spirit. Suddenly a handpulled her arm and turned her about.

The room seemed to have been a lounging place for night workers. There were some nine cots in the place, two or three woodenchairs, a soap box, and a small, round-bellied stove, in which afire was blazing. Early as he was, another man was there beforehim. The latter was sitting beside the stove warming his hands.

With the wane of the afternoon went her hopes, her courage, andher strength. She had been astonishingly persistent. So earnestan effort was well deserving of a better reward. On every hand,to her fatigued senses, the great business portion grew larger, harder, more stolid in its indifference. It seemed as if it wasall closed to her, that the struggle was too fierce for her tohope to do anything at all. Men and women hurried by in long, shifting lines. She felt the flow of the tide of effort andinterest--felt her own helplessness without quite realising thewisp on the tide that she was. She cast about vainly for somepossible place to apply, but found no door which she had thecourage to enter. It would be the same thing all over. The oldhumiliation of her plea, rewarded by curt denial. Sick at heartand in body, she turned to the west, the direction of Minnie'sflat, which she had now fixed in mind, and began that wearisome, baffled retreat which the seeker for employment at nightfall toooften makes. In passing through Fifth Avenue, south towards VanBuren Street, where she intended to take a car, she passed thedoor of a large wholesale shoe house, through the plate-glasswindows of which she could see a middle-aged gentleman sitting ata small desk. One of those forlorn impulses which often grow outof a fixed sense of defeat, the last sprouting of a baffled anduprooted growth of ideas, seized upon her. She walkeddeliberately through the door and up to the gentleman, who lookedat her weary face with partially awakened interest.

Owing to the peculiar nature of his position, such a disclosureas this would ordinarily create no difficulty. His wife took itfor granted that his situation called for certain socialmovements in which she might not be included. But of late he hadpleaded office duty on several occasions when his wife asked forhis company to any evening entertainment. He had done so inregard to the very evening in question only the morning before.

{ The hours slipped by, and with them the possibility of the unionhe had contemplated. He had thought to be joyously aiding Carrieby now in the task of joining her interests to his, and here itwas afternoon and nothing done. Three o'clock came, four, five, six, and no letter. The helpless manager paced the floor andgrimly endured the gloom of defeat. He saw a busy Saturdayushered out, the Sabbath in, and nothing done. All day, the barbeing closed, he brooded alone, shut out from home, from theexcitement of his resort, from Carrie, and without the ability toalter his condition one iota. It was the worst Sunday he hadspent in his life.

"I'd be delighted, but I can't to-night," said Mrs. Vancestudying Carrie's fine appearance. The latter's good fortunemade her seem more than ever worthy and delightful in the otherseyes. "I promised faithfully to be home at six." Glancing at thesmall gold watch pinned to her bosom, she added: "I must begoing, too. Tell me when you're coming up, if at all."
