1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 D'Artagnan could not restrain a smile. By this smile M. deTreville judged that he had not to deal with a fool, and changingthe conversation, came straight to the point.
2. "Monseigneur," replied Milady, "a fair exchange. Life forlife, man for man; give me one, I will give you the other.""I don't know what you mean, nor do I even desire to knowwhat you mean," replied the cardinal; "but I wish to pleaseyou, and see nothing out of the way in giving you what youdemand with respect to so infamous a creature--the more soas you tell me this D'Artagnan is a libertine, a duelist, and a traitor."
3. Patrick went out.
4. "Well, so be it," said D'Artagnan. "Draw up this note forus, Aramis; but by our Holy Father the Pope, cut it short, for I shall prune you in my turn, I warn you."
5. "But what?"
6. "The third, then, fell from the clouds, I suppose?""No, the third was brought to me this very morning by agroom out of livery, who would not tell me in whose servicehe was, and who said he had received orders from hismaster."

1. And the four friends flew at a gallop along the road to Bethune.
2. Milady reseated herself, foaming. The officer leaned forward, looked at her in his turn, and appeared surprised to see thatface, just before so beautiful, distorted with passion and almosthideous. The artful creature at once comprehended that she wasinjuring herself by allowing him thus to read her soul; shecollected her features, and in a complaining voice said: "In thename of heaven, sir, tell me if it is to you, if it is to yourgovernment, if it is to an enemy I am to attribute the violencethat is done me?"
3. As long as he was in the city, Planchet kept at the respectfuldistance he had imposed upon himself; but as soon as the roadbegan to be more lonely and dark, he drew softly nearer, so thatwhen they entered the Bois de Boulogne he found himself ridingquite naturally side by side with his master. In fact, we mustnot dissemble that the oscillation of the tall trees and thereflection of the moon in the dark underwood gave him seriousuneasiness. D'Artagnan could not help perceiving that somethingmore than usual was passing in the mind of his lackey and said,"Well, Monsieur Planchet, what is the matter with us now?""Don't you think, monsieur, that woods are like churches?""How so, Planchet?"
4. "That is likely," said D'Artagnan; "but the man who has abductedher--do you know him?"
5. "Stop a bit!" said Aramis.
6. "In that case let us go," said the shipmaster.

1. There are in affluence a crowd of aristocratic cares and capriceswhich are highly becoming to beauty. A fine and white stocking,a silken robe, a lace kerchief, a pretty slipper on the foot, atasty ribbon on the head do not make an ugly woman pretty, butthey make a pretty woman beautiful, without reckoning the hands, which gain by all this; the hands, among women particularly, tobe beautiful must be idle.
2. "Well, it is true!" said Anne of Austria; "and the spies of thecardinal have served him faithfully. I have written a lettertoday; that letter is not yet gone. The letter is here." Andthe queen laid her beautiful hand on her bosom.
3. "Ah, that's quite another thing; but promise me, if you shouldnot be killed tonight, that you will go tomorrow.""I promise it."
4. But D'Artagnan again shook his head. For people toward whomhe had but to put forth his hand, his Eminence had rarelyrecourse to such means.
5. "Then," continued the host, "I replied that as from the moment weseemed not likely to come to a good understanding with respect topayment, I hoped that he would have at least the kindness togrant the favor of his custom to my brother host of the GoldenEagle; but Monsieur Porthos replied that, my house being thebest, he should remain where he was. This reply was tooflattering to allow me to insist on his departure. I confinedmyself then to begging him to give up his chamber, which is thehandsomest in the hotel, and to be satisfied with a pretty littleroom on the third floor; but to this Monsieur Porthos repliedthat as he every moment expected his mistress, who was one of thegreatest ladies in the court, I might easily comprehend that thechamber he did me the honor to occupy in my house was itself verymean for the visit of such a personage. Nevertheless, whileacknowledging the truth of what he said, I thought proper toinsist; but without even giving himself the trouble to enter intoany discussion with me, he took one of his pistols, laid it onhis table, day and night, and said that at the first word thatshould be spoken to him about removing, either within the houseor our of it, he would blow out the brains of the person whoshould be so imprudent as to meddle with a matter which onlyconcerned himself. Since that time, monsieur, nobody enter hischamber but his servant."
6. Bonacieux was cowardly and avaricious, but he loved his wife. Hewas softened. A man of fifty cannot long bear malice with a wifeof twenty-three. Mme. Bonacieux saw that he hesitated."Come! Have you decided?" said she.

1. "My faith," said D'Artagnan to Athos, "you had a triumphantidea! As you said, we have acquired glory, and were enabledto carry on a conversation of the highest importance.""Which we can resume now without anybody suspecting us, for, with the help of God, we shall henceforth pass forcardinalists."
2. "Yes; and that reminds me that I have a revenge to take. Wewill see, my dear monsieur, if you can handle a sword asskillfully as you can a dice box."
3. "They will come for her tomorrow or the day after, with an order fromthe queen."
4、 "But you are wounded, it seems," said Planchet.
5、 "And in what have I been so unfortunate as to displease yourMajesty?" asked M. de Treville, feigning the most profoundastonishment.

The Comte de Wardes was announced, and D'Artagnan was introduced."You have an order signed by the cardinal?" said the governor."Yes, monsieur," replied D'Artagnan; "here it is.""Ah, ah! It is quite regular and explicit," said the governor."Most likely," said D'Artagnan; "I am one of his most faithfulservants."

"Well," said Porthos, "I will run to the hotel, and engageour comrades to hold themselves in readiness by eighto'clock; the rendezvous, the Place du Palais-Cardinal.Meantime, you see that the lackeys saddle the horses.""I have no horse," said D'Artagnan; "but that is of noconsequence, I can take one of Monsieur de Treville's.""That is not worth while," said Aramis, "you can have one ofmine."

      But, as we have said, Bazin had not, by his fortunatereturn, removed more than a part of the uneasiness whichweighed upon the four friends. The days of expectation arelong, and D'Artagnan, in particular, would have wagered thatthe days were forty-four hours. He forgot the necessaryslowness of navigation; he exaggerated to himself the powerof Milady. He credited this woman, who appeared to him theequal of a demon, with agents as supernatural as herself; atthe least noise, he imagined himself about to be arrested,and that Planchet was being brought back to be confrontedwith himself and his friends. Still further, his confidencein the worthy Picard, at one time so great, diminished dayby day. This anxiety became so great that it even extendedto Aramis and Porthos. Athos alone remained unmoved, as ifno danger hovered over him, and as if he breathed hiscustomary atmosphere.}

The breakfast at M. de Treville's was as gay and cheerful aspossible. D'Artagnan already wore his uniform--for beingnearly of the same size as Aramis, and as Aramis was soliberally paid by the publisher who purchased his poem as toallow him to buy everything double, he sold his friend acomplete outfit.
