1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Not at all. I am glad to have a friend with whom I candiscuss my results. The matter is a perfectly trivial one"--hejerked his thumb in the direction of the old hat--"but there arepoints in connection with it which are not entirely devoid ofinterest and even of instruction."
2. A moment later he was in the room. Mr. John Garrideb, Counsellorat Law, was a short, powerful man with the round, fresh,clean-shaven face characteristic of so many American men of affairs. The general effect was chubby and rather childlike, so that onereceived the impression of quite a young man with a broad set smileupon his face. His eyes, however, were arresting. Seldom in anyhuman head have I seen a pair which bespoke a more intense inwardlife, so bright were they, so alert, so responsive to every changeof thought. His accent was American, but was not accompanied by anyeccentricity of speech.
3. The ejaculation had been drawn from my companion by the fact thatour door had been suddenly dashed open, and that a huge man had framedhimself in the aperture. His costume was a peculiar mixture of theprofessional and of the agricultural, having a black top-hat, a longfrock-coat, and a pair of high gaiters, with a hunting-crop swingingin his hand. So tall was he that his hat actually brushed the crossbar of the doorway, and his breadth seemed to span it across from sideto side. A large face, seared with a thousand wrinkles, burnedyellow with the sun, and marked with every evil passion, was turnedfrom one to the other of us, while his deep-set, bile-shot eyes, andhis high, thin, fleshless nose, gave him somewhat the resemblance to afierce old bird of prey.
4. "I think that there is a small experiment which we may tryto-morrow, Watson, in order to throw some light on the matter.Meanwhile, if we mean to keep up our characters, I suggest that wehave our host in for a glass of his own wine and hold some highconverse upon eels and dace, which seems to be the straight road tohis affections. We may chance to come upon some useful local gossip inthe process."
5. "Yes, sir. There is really no one else when you come to think of it.That's the advantage of this solitude. We narrow it down to a verysmall compass. If he did not do it, then who did?"
6. "Well, she took her glass, but now it is often a whole bottle ofan evening. So Stephens, the butler, told me. It's all changed, Mr.Holmes, and there is something damned rotten about it. But then, again, what is master doing down at the old church crypt at night? Andwho is the man that meets him there?"

1. "What is this, Holmes?" I cried. "This is beyond anything which Icould have imagined."
2. "If you leave it to a court of law to clear the matter up," said he,"of course you can hardly avoid publicity. On the other hand, if youconvince the police authorities that there is no possible case againstyou., I do not know that there is any reason that the details shouldfind their way into the papers. Inspector Bradstreet would, I am sure, make notes upon anything which you might tell us and submit it tothe proper authorities. The case would then never go into court atall."
3. "Were they good friends at other times?"
4. "I remember," Holmes gasped. "The spring! It drew blood. This box-this on the table."
5. She looked at me helplessly. "What can I do?"
6. Without a word, the Duke pressed the electric bell. A servantentered.

1. "'You shall go free if you sign. What house is this?'
2. "Then the page we have seen--"
3. "'In my own bureau.'
4. "Yes, sir."
5. Holmes shook his clenched hands in the air. "Incredibleimbecility!" he cried.
6. "I fully share your opinion, and I trust, with you, that we mayprove it," returned Holmes, going back to the mat to knock the snowfrom his shoes. "I believe I have the honour of addressing Miss MaryHolder. Might I ask you a question or two?"

1. "The other bicycle."
2. "By Jove, I told you so!" cried the clerk. "That's he walkingahead of us there"
3. "Deeply interested- yes. There is a thread where which we have notyet grasped and which might lead us through the tangle. Cheer up,Watson, for I am very sure that our material has not yet all come tohand. When it does we may soon leave our difficulties behind us."Little did I think how soon the words of Holmes would be realized,or how strange and sinister would be that new development which openedup an entirely fresh line of investigation. I was shaving at my windowin the morning when I heard the rattle of hoofs and, looking up, saw adog-cart coming at a gallop down the road. It pulled up at our door, and our friend, the vicar, sprang from it and rushed up our gardenpath. Holmes was already dressed, and we hastened down to meet him.Our visitor was so excited that he could hardly articulate, but atlast in gasps and bursts his tragic story came out of him."We are devil-ridden, Mr. Holmes! My poor parish is devil-ridden!"he cried. "Satan himself is loose in it! We are given over into hishands!" He danced about in his agitation, a ludicrous object if itwere not for his ashy face and startled eyes. Finally he shot outhis terrible news.
4、 Holmes was down on his knees, examining with great attention theknots upon the red cord with which the lady had been secured. Thenhe carefully scrutinized the broken and frayed end where it hadsnapped off when the burglar had dragged it down.
5、 "There was a period of excitement upon August 26th. We will assumethat he is a little hazy as to what he does at such times. If weinsist that we are there by appointment I think he will hardly ventureto contradict us. Have you the effrontery necessary to put itthrough?"

So far all had gone admirably. My luggage was waiting for me, andI had no difficulty in finding the carriage which Holmes hadindicated, the less so as it was the only one in the train which wasmarked "Engaged." My only source of anxiety now was the non-appearanceof Holmes. The station clock marked only seven minutes from the timewhen we were due to start. In vain I searched among the groups oftravellers and leave-takers for the lithe figure of my friend. Therewas no sign of him. I spent a few minutes in assisting a venerableItalian priest, who was endeavouring to make a porter understand, inhis broken English, that his luggage was to be booked through toParis. Then, having taken another look round, I returned to mycarriage, where I found that the porter, in spite of the ticket, hadgiven me my decrepit Italian friend as a travelling companion. Itwas useless for me to explain to him that his presence was anintrusion, for my Italian was even more limited than his English, so Ishrugged my shoulders resignedly, and continued to look outanxiously for my friend. A chill of fear had come over me, as Ithought that his absence might mean that some blow had fallen duringthe night. Already the doors had all been shut and the whistleblown, when-

{ "The next step is the note received by Garcia at the dinner. Itindicates a confederate at the other end. Now, where was the otherend? I have already shown you that it could only lie in some largehouse, and that the number of large houses, is limited. My firstdays in this village were devoted to a series of walks in which in theintervals of my botanical researches I made a reconnaissance of allthe large houses and an examination of the family history of theoccupants. One house, and only one, riveted my attention. It is thefamous old Jacobean grange of High Gable, one mile on the farther sideof Oxshott, and less than half a mile from the scene of the tragedy. The other mansions belonged to prosaic and respectable people who livefar aloof from romance. But Mr. Henderson, of High Gable, was by allaccounts a curious man to whom curious adventures might befall. Iconcentrated my attention, therefore, upon him and his household."A singular set of people, Watson- the man himself the most singularof them all. I managed to see him on a plausible pretext, but I seemedto read in his dark, deep-set, brooding eyes that he was perfectlyaware of my true business. He is a man of fifty, strong, active, with iron-gray hair, great bunched black eyebrows, the step of a deer, and the air of an emperor- a fierce, masterful man, with a red-hotspirit behind his parchment face. He is either a foreigner or haslived long in the tropics, for he is yellow and sapless, but toughas whipcord. His friend and secretary, Mr. Lucas, is undoubtedly aforeigner, chocolate brown, wily, suave, and catlike, with a poisonousgentleness of speech. You see, Watson, we have come already upon twosets of foreigners- one at Wisteria Lodge and one at High Gable- soour gaps are beginning to close.
