1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 The place that had been so comfortable, where he had spent somany days of warmth, was now a memory. Something colder andchillier confronted him. He sank down in his chair, resting hischin in his hand--mere sensation, without thought, holding him.
2. At a corner farther up a man stood by the track and signalled thecar to stop.
3. That was not before he had become settled, however. Carrie andhe went looking for a flat, as arranged, and found one inSeventy-eighth Street near Amsterdam Avenue. It was a five-storybuilding, and their flat was on the third floor. Owing to thefact that the street was not yet built up solidly, it waspossible to see east to the green tops of the trees in CentralPark and west to the broad waters of the Hudson, a glimpse ofwhich was to be had out of the west windows. For the privilegeof six rooms and a bath, running in a straight line, they werecompelled to pay thirty-five dollars a month--an average, and yetexorbitant, rent for a home at the time. Carrie noticed thedifference between the size of the rooms here and in Chicago andmentioned it.
4. "She doesn't mind," answered Jessica, coolly.
5. This conversation was interrupted by the blare of the orchestraand the sputtering of the calcium lights in the wings as the linewas called to form for a new entrance. No further opportunityfor conversation occurred, but the next evening, when they weregetting ready for the stage, this girl appeared anew at her side.
6. When Hurstwood got back to his office again he was in a greaterquandary than ever. Lord, Lord, he thought, what had he gotinto? How could things have taken such a violent turn, and soquickly? He could hardly realise how it had all come about. Itseemed a monstrous, unnatural, unwarranted condition which hadsuddenly descended upon him without his let or hindrance.

1. "I don't know," said the director. "I'm afraid he'll never pickup."
2. "Oh, you know," and Drouet waved her intelligence, as it were, with his hand.
3. "It's not very hard to get work now," put in Hanson, "if you lookright."
4. The next morning he had cooled down considerably, and later theticket was duly secured, though it did not heal matters. He didnot mind giving his family a fair share of all that he earned, but he did not like to be forced to provide against his will.
5. Outside in the gloom they stood, while the leader parleyedwithin. Then doors swung open and they were invited in with a"Steady, now."
6. "Now," he said, addressing first Carrie and then Drouet with hiseyes, "you must be ready at 7.30. I'll come and get you."

1. "Evans," he said, addressing the head barkeeper, "if any onecalls, I will be back between four and five."
2. When she went into her own flat she had this to think about. Shedid not know whether she would ever see this man any more. Whatdifference could it make--what difference could it make?
3. Carrie saw no more of Mrs. Vance for several weeks, but she heardher play through the thin walls which divided the front rooms ofthe flats, and was pleased by the merry selection of pieces andthe brilliance of their rendition. She could play onlymoderately herself, and such variety as Mrs. Vance exercisedbordered, for Carrie, upon the verge of great art. Everythingshe had seen and heard thus far--the merest scraps and shadows--indicated that these people were, in a measure, refined and incomfortable circumstances. So Carrie was ready for any extensionof the friendship which might follow.
4. "What's here?" asked Carrie, wondering at his choosing to visitthis town.
5. "We are going to see Charlie, aren't we?" she asked.
6. "Let's go at once and walk down Broadway from Thirty-fourthStreet," said Mrs. Vance. "It's such an interesting walk. He'sat the Madison Square."

1. She began to dress at three o'clock for her departure at half-past five for the noted dining-room which was then crowdingDelmonico's for position in society. In this dressing Carrieshowed the influence of her association with the dashing Mrs.Vance. She had constantly had her attention called by the latterto novelties in everything which pertains to a woman's apparel.
2. The progress of the train was having a great deal to do with thesolution of this difficult situation. The speeding wheels anddisappearing country put Chicago farther and farther behind.Carrie could feel that she was being borne a long distance off--that the engine was making an almost through run to some distantcity. She felt at times as if she could cry out and make such arow that some one would come to her aid; at other times it seemedan almost useless thing--so far was she from any aid, no matterwhat she did. All the while Hurstwood was endeavouring toformulate his plea in such a way that it would strike home andbring her into sympathy with him.
3. "He is out of the city," said the girl, who had heard Carrie tellthis to Mrs. Hale.
4、 "I call about my bill," said Mr. Oeslogge.
5、 "Now," continued Mr. Withers, swaying his derby hat softly andbeating one of his polished shoes upon the floor, "I want toarrange, if possible, to have you come and stop at theWellington. You need not trouble about terms. In fact, we needhardly discuss them. Anything will do for the summer--a merefigure--anything that you think you could afford to pay."

      "I will," said Drouet, smilingly.

      "Compromise!" exclaimed Hurstwood bitterly. "Compromise!"

The place smelled of the oil of the machines and the new leather--a combination which, added to the stale odours of the building, was not pleasant even in cold weather. The floor, thoughregularly swept every evening, presented a littered surface. Notthe slightest provision had been made for the comfort of theemployees, the idea being that something was gained by givingthem as little and making the work as hard and unremunerative aspossible. What we know of foot-rests, swivel-back chairs,dining-rooms for the girls, clean aprons and curling ironssupplied free, and a decent cloak room, were unthought of. Thewashrooms were disagreeable, crude, if not foul places, and thewhole atmosphere was sordid.

With this loss and ordinary expenses, so much had already gone.

{ "I guess you find New York quite a thing to see, don't you?" saidCarrie, venturing something to avoid a possible deadly silence.

      Both Hurstwood and Drouet viewed her pretty figure with risingfeelings. The fact that such ability should reveal itself inher, that they should see it set forth under such effectivecircumstances, framed almost in massy gold and shone upon by theappropriate lights of sentiment and personality, heightened hercharm for them. She was more than the old Carrie to Drouet. Helonged to be at home with her until he could tell her. Heawaited impatiently the end, when they should go home alone.}

      One experienced youth volunteered, anyhow.

{ No longer any need of climbing several flights of steps to asmall coop shared with another. Instead, a comparatively largeand commodious chamber with conveniences not enjoyed by the smallfry overhead. She breathed deeply and with delight. Hersensations were more physical than mental. In fact, she wasscarcely thinking at all. Heart and body were having their say.
